About the Unit
Mission
The mission of the Mounted Unit is to provide mounted resources to the sheriff’s office for the purposes of high-visibility anti-crime patrols, community outreach, search and rescue, and crowd control.
Strategy
The strategy behind using mounted patrol deputies in law enforcement today is that they create a visible and approachable law enforcement presence in neighborhoods where this presence is needed the most. Recent studies by Oxford University have shown that increased visibility by these "four-legged law officers" lowers crime and increases public trust and confidence in their law enforcement.
“Reading to Horses”
In 2020, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Mounted Unit launched the "Reading to Horses" program. The goal was to visit local elementary schools and allow children to increase their literary skills by reading aloud to the Mounted Unit horses. To support that goal, The Happy Police Horse was written! Unit Commander Lt. Rich Anselmi authored the tale, based on the story of his own police horse, Benelli. The story was illustrated by Deputy Mateo Montoya-Collis. Thanks to generous donors and book sales, every child who attends a "Reading to Horses" event is able to have their own book to take home and share with their family.
Up to November of 2024, about 3,500 students have gone through the reading program and received free books. The unit now has three books for sale and for use in the program:
Book 1- “The Happy Police Horse” – inspired by how horses become police horses
Book2- “Julie’s Wish” – inspired by our therapy miniature horses that joined the team
Book 3- “A Good Day for Teamwork”- inspired by the work police horses do in the community
Purchasing a book helps the Mounted Unit continue this impactful program!
